In a significant move toward inclusivity, TikTok has announced that starting next month that auto captions will be the default setting on all videos. This move will ensure a more accessible experience for all users.
While previously, creators could enable auto captions manually, this feature will now be activated automatically on every clip, eliminating the toggle option during the upload process. According to TikTok, this change is aimed at breaking down language barriers and making the app enjoyable for all users, regardless of hearing abilities.
TikTok has stated, “You can modify the captions authorization status for any video that has already been posted before November. After which, all eligible videos in supported languages will have captions by default.” TikTok’s commitment to ensuring an inclusive platform where everyone can engage without limitations is commendable. It’s a significant stride toward creating a more inclusive digital environment.
Creators will retain the flexibility to edit or delete captions even after posting, allowing for personalized adjustments while maintaining wider accessibility. This move not only benefits users with hearing difficulties but also enhances the experience for those watching TikToks in situations where sound might be off, which as it turns out is a large portion of the platform’s users.
Currently, this change applies to English language videos, with plans to extend the feature to other languages, indicating a positive shift toward a more inclusive and diverse digital landscape.
Automatic captions are also available in several languages on YouTube and Meta, though not for all videos as yet, and they’re not active by default. So TikTok’s initiative is not only commendable but also paves the way for other platforms to follow suit, ensuring a more inclusive online experience for all users.
